Fells On Calico (2023)
Oil pastel, acrylic on raw calico
The term 'Fell' is Cumbrian dialect for the expanses of high, uncultivated, common grazing land where I grew up. The 'Fells' are embedded in my memory and though I don't look at them daily (as I no longer live in that part of the country), I continue to carry their shapes and textures with me. The imagined landscapes depicted are conjured up from a variety of sources, art historical references, social media, books and magazines. The resulting works are of no specific place in particular but being informed by lots of places act as an invitation for the viewer to recall their own loved landscapes, real or imagined. Colours are informed by record sleeves, art historical paintings, social media and fashion. Due to a colour deficiency I see colour differently to most, with vibrant contrasts being easier for me to see, focusing on texture alongside colour as well as disrupting bombastic human proclamations of 'capturing nature'.
